About Department
In Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya, the Department of Physics was established in 2009 under the University of Calcutta. Department offers both BSc. Honours and General. The teachers of the department possess good relation with the students and also among themselves. Students are taught with utmost care and sincerity. Tutorial classes, Class tests, Student seminars, Quiz contests, Departmental tours/picnic and Departmental seminars are conducted for the upliftment of the academic and cultural knowledge of the students. |
Library Facility:
- Have the facility of central Library of the college.
- Department /Seminar Library also offers its students some reference books from the departmental book-club.
Prospect of the Program:
B.Sc. (Hons.) (Bachelor of Science) in Physics (Hons.) Program provides theoretical as well as practical knowledge about different subject areas of basic science. In our college, students can choose Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Economics as a general subject in a combination with Physics as the Honours subject. The program is useful for the students with interest and background in Science, Mathematics and computation. The program helps to develop some generic ability of a student such as it creates scientific temperament among them which in turn is useful for the society and also for the scientific development of the nation. While studying systematically, a student becomes capable to critically analyze a social issue, analytically judge the problem and try to solve it in a scientific way. Since they need to work collaboratively in a laboratory or in a project, it helps to develop the ability to perform in collaboration with others in a scientific way. It awards the students with ethical awareness i.e; creating impartial goals and genuine actions in all aspects of work by identifying ethical issues related to their work. They must develop the moral values so that they acknowledge direct and indirect contributions received from all sources, including from other personnel in the collaborative work. Also they become responsible towards preserving the sustainability of our environment through active participation in courses like Environmental studies. The students of this program develop good communication skills to deliver scientific information in a precise manner verbally and in the written language or through ICT presentations. They would apply the knowledge for creating the sustainable and eco-friendly technology for a pollution-free environment. Students will be capable of working in a laboratory and to verify theoretical concepts by performing laboratory experiments and also collaborate effectively on team-oriented projects in any field. Besides profound knowledge of various areas of Physics, the students develop computational skills such as coding, data analysis, graphical analysis using various software, packages. As a result, after studying this program successfully, one can pursue higher studies in basic or social sciences in different Universities, IIT’s etc. or in applied science/technical courses, B.Ed. and some other professional job-oriented courses. Also they acquire the appropriate skills for working in the IT sector or in other MNCs or work as an entrepreneur in a chosen field.

- Faculty strength is low; need more faculty for smooth running of a practical-based subject like Physics
- No post of laboratory attendant

- Trend of decreasing admission in pure science
